i just gobbled down this simple, but nonetheless delicious, summertime salad. simple as in spinach, a sliced bell pepper, mung bean sprouts, a light feta cheese and some ground pepper. one of the greatest thing about summertime is how tasty everything gets. plus there's so much to choose from...the grocery store shelves are just overflowing with juicy figs (my favorite) and all kinds of sweet (not bitter) colorful berries and peaches and plums (oh my)!
we get so spoiled here, having such great access to so much fresh produce, meat and fish. even when sean and i were down in santa cruz, just an hour or so south, it was much harder to find really fresh stuff. i was expecting to find a lot of great seafood at the markets, but everything looked, i dunno, sort of tired (if a dead fish can look 'tired') and the wrong color -- nothing like the milky white and silky smooth texture of the scallops i saw at bi-rite (the market just a few blocks from our apartment) this evening. i think i may go back tomorrow night to get me and sean a few of those puppies, though i need to read up first on how to pan-sear them, as we don't have a grill here.
